Conception and implantation
Approximately
two weeks after you have your period, you ovulate and the ovaries will release
one mature egg. The egg will be fertilized for 12 up to 24 hours after it is
released down the fallopian tube on the way to the uterus. If the egg meets
with a sperm cell that is on the way to fallopian tube, it will be combined
into one cell called conception or fertilization.
At
the conception, the fetus’ sex will be determined, based on whether the egg
receives the chromosome of an X or Y from the sperm cell. If the egg receives
an X chromosome, then the baby would be a girl and vice versa. Generally, it
takes about four days for the embryo or fertilized egg to move to the uterus
line where it implants the uterine wall. Once the fertilized egg implanted, the
cells then will start to grow becoming fetus and placenta.
